Permanent Resident Card

A Permanent resident card (PR card) is an identity card that shows the individual as a permanent resident in Canada. Normally, a PR card is valid for five years and every PR card holder needs to renew their PR card before the expiry date.

As a permanent resident of Canada, you must live in Canada for at least 2 years of every 5 years of period. Failure to meet residencial residence obligation, you may face the risk of losing the PR status.

If you are outside Canada without a valid PR card, you need to apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD) to return Canada.
