There are two main types of work permit，Employer Specific work permit and Open work permit.

An employer-specific work permit allows a foreign national to work in Canada for a specific employer for a specific period of time and at the location of the employer. Normally, a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) will be needed for this type of work permit.

An open work permit allows a foreign national to work for any employer in Canada. It is only issued in some specific situations.
